Next in my series of informative, timely payroll related information is dealing with Minors’ Work Hours and Occupation Restrictions. The content is pulled from a Massachusetts Working Papers package, however most states will have similar rules. If you are not in Mass though, please check your state. The document does include relevant and applicable Federal laws as well. Kids working is no playing matter. We all want to see our kids work, but in this country, and in Massachusetts, it’s highly regulated, so tread carefully and read this document completely.
The linked document deals with outright Prohibited Jobs(Hazardous Orders); what Persons Under 16 year old may NOT; what Persons under 18 years old may NOT; Tasks not specifically permitted by the US DOL Secretary of Labor are prohibited. Legal Work Hours for Teens in Massachusetts; 14 and 15 Year Olds Work Hours including Maximum Hours When School Is In Session and Maximum Hours When School is NOT in Session; and lastly, 16 and 17 Year Olds Work Hours…
I hope you find this helpful in either hiring a teenager or if you are a parent, that your child finds something interesting for the summer…click the pic of the kid for the full document…

Its amazing how things have changed! I started working when I was 14 and none of these “rules” even existed! Thanks Mitch!
